From industry to “Smart City”

The Bucket List - Feel the City

Graz is one of the fastest growing capitals in Austria with a booming housing market. The conversion of former industrial areas in mixed use developments must not expel the working areas but integrate them in a sustainable living-working environment. The city has been supporting the comprehensive transformation of large industrial areas into mixed use neighbourhoods in order to enhance the urban quality of these monofunctional environments. The areas close to the rail tracks provide one of the largest reserves for inner city growth. The site is characterized by its schizophrenic fringe condition: heavy infrastructure in the east, calm housing developments in the west. The suggested configuration of buildings defines urban edges, public spaces and creates an urban atmosphere. The two buildings “Framework” and “Beach House” with the big yard in between, are the grid for the wide range of diffrent uses, such as housing, working, leisure and school. The typology provides variability and flexibility for diffrent uses, gives identity to the road and displays all kind of possible activities. To give the various spaces an identity, we were looking for „activities“ that trigger people’s emotions. We summed up these activities in a “Bucket List” and enliven the public spaces with these themes. Open spaces are designed in such a way, that invites the user to certain interactions. Experiences and associated feelings of happiness become part of the collective memory and thereby form the identity of public spaces. Spaces of memory emerge. The interventions should further create a better understanding for energy, improve social networks of the neighbourhood and encourage a better lifestyle. By offering a market, small stores and different spaces with open use, small businesses can gain ground more easily. Always following the slogan “feel free”. With the planned campus there is the opportunity for a new lifestyle, especially for the younger generation, mediate knowledge and carry it into the city.
